VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT
What is a VINGurus Vehicle History Report?
A VINGurus Vehicle History Report is a detailed document that helps you make a confident decision when buying a used car. It shows if a vehicle has been scrapped, stolen, salvaged, or involved in accidents that were not disclosed. You’ll also see key information like ownership history, odometer records, market pricing, and more.
Combined with a test drive and a professional inspection, the VINGurus report gives you a clearer picture of the vehicle’s true condition and history—so you don’t overpay or fall victim to fraud.

What are your data sources?
We collect data from trusted partners across all 50 U.S. states, including:
- State DMV and transportation departments
- Insurance carriers
- Salvage and auction yards
- Law enforcement databases
- Auto dealerships and inspection services
- NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System)
Can I get a report for a vehicle made before 1981?
Unfortunately, no. Vehicles manufactured before 1981 do not use the standardized 17-digit VIN format, so we cannot retrieve accurate data for them.
What if I receive a "No Records Found" message?
- First, verify that your VIN was entered correctly.
- If correct, it may mean:
-
- The vehicle is too new for data to be available yet.
- It wasn’t reported to NMVTIS or other sources.
- The vehicle was made before 1981.
We’re constantly updating our database—leave your email and we’ll notify you if new data becomes available.
Does a "clean" report mean the car is problem-free?
Not always. While we gather data from reliable sources, no report can guarantee a car is free of issues. Some damage or title problems may never be officially reported.
That’s why we recommend combining the report with:
- A full mechanical inspection
- A test drive
- A review of maintenance records
Use all available tools to make an informed buying decision.
What is NMVTIS?
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a U.S. Department of Justice database designed to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles. It requires regular reporting from:
- Auto recyclers
- Junk and salvage yards
- Insurance companies
- State titling agencies
However, not all states or entities report data in real time, so NMVTIS is valuable but not infallible.
Why does my VIN show "No Data Available" from NMVTIS?
This usually means NMVTIS has no record of that vehicle. Possible reasons:
- The VIN is incorrect or invalid
- The vehicle is very new
- It was never reported to NMVTIS by a state, insurer, or salvage operator
- The vehicle comes from a non-participating state (view list here)
Even if NMVTIS has no data, the vehicle may still have damage, title issues, or prior accidents. Always use additional verification.
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN)
What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a vehicle. No two vehicles share the same VIN. It reveals the car’s manufacturer, production year, country of origin, and other specs.
Where can I find my VIN?
Check these common locations:
- Driver-side windshield (dashboard)
- Inside the driver-side door frame
- Vehicle registration or title documents
- Insurance paperwork
- Service or inspection records
- On some parts: engine block, firewall, or under the hood
